The family of Martins Bunkus expresses their gratitude to the State Police
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the management of the State Police, the authority in charge of the criminal proceedings and all the police personnel who contributed to solving Martins’ murder. We are therefore perplexed that internal security is not a priority at the state level. We consider that it should be the same priority as the state’s external security is today. With adequate funding and working conditions.
The ability to solve a brutal and complex crime is a matter of state’s internal security. No one can be safe if murderers remain unpunished, which is not only important in the case of Martins’ death, but it signals to the entire criminal society that the state is ready to defend its citizens, investigate complex crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice. What is particularly important is that in this case, the entire criminal chain, from the executor to the organizer to the commissioner, will be brought before the court.
Nothing is over yet, there is a trial ahead and we hope for a just judgment. We will follow the procedure closely and raise the alarm whenever there is the slightest suspicion of pressure or attempts to influence it, which unfortunately was the case during the investigation. We hope that in Latvia, threats, money and power cannot be used to influence a fair judicial decision,”
says Kristaps Bunkus, brother of the murdered attorney at law Martins Bunkus.
As reported on 24 November this year, the State Police handed over the murder investigation case of Martins Bunkus to the Riga Court District Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation took 4 years and the case materials have been compiled in 121 volumes.
